if this movie leaves me feeling "baited" rather than "educated" I'm gonna be salty.

Star Wars Documentary showing in Chicago this Friday

June 9th, 2009 (01:33 pm)

Cross-posted from meetup.com
to Facebook, Livejournal, Blogger and the Windy Citizen

"The Force Among Us" -- Showing at the Gene Siskel Film Center located downtown at 164 North State Street. Tickets are $9 for general admission, $7 for students.

From the website: "On the eve of the Film Center’s tribute to George Lucas, the Chicago-based brother-and-sister filmmaking team of Cristian and Cortney Macht take us deep inside the world of STAR WARS fandom. Sociology profs ponder the phenomenon, Joseph Campbell is name-checked, Christian parallels are explored, the 501st Legion of costumed stormtroopers converges at a convention, and the Machts follow fans on pilgrimages to the original movie locations in Tunisia and Norway. Along the way, they discover that STAR WARS fans are a varied and unstereotyped lot about whom no blanket generalizations can be drawn--except, perhaps, a universal dislike for Jar Jar Binks."

NOTE: This is the Chicago premier! In attendance will be key cast and crew members from the documentary as well the stormtrooper costuming group, the 501st! The film will be followed by a Q+A session with the cast and crew. This is the only scheduled showing.

Not a meetup event yet but might be. Chime in on the message board or email the organizers if you'd like to see a meetup event for this.

finally...I got the at-home internet. Now what?

March 23rd, 2009 (02:09 pm)

You ever long for something for years on end and finally get it and freeze? Yeah. That's where I am now. At home. online whenever I want. No shlepping to the library. No using the horribly dated machines in the building where I live. I told myself the world would be my oyster "if only I had internet at home.
...so...
here we are....
the laptop, the cable modem and me.
now what?
a temporary dilemma, to be sure, but today I'm feeling stymied.

Here's my whole take on the Breaking Dawn

August 4th, 2008 (06:43 pm)

My mood on Facebook is "Trudy Hobbit Seabrook
is shaking like a phasing wolf. SCREW STEPHENIE MEYER FOR REAL. IMPRINT THIS YOU CRAZY BROAD! OMG! SCREW HER!"

That's my story and I'm sticking to that shit. Jacob's pretty much Bella's personal wolfskin rug.

Stephenie Meyer needs a smack. seriously.

this shit happened at a FEMINIST convention

June 3rd, 2008 (07:59 pm)

A feminist science fiction convention should be the one place in the universe that women are safe from this bullshit:

http://community.livejournal.com/wiscon/154275.html?#cutid1

A woman got, of course anonymously, attacked on a blog by someone who hated the very sight of her, judged her horrendously BY APPEARANCE and took her rant straight back to fascist halls of high schools past.

[info]purplefrog26 is my personal hero, because if that was done to me I would have read that darkness-dwelling fucktard like the morning paper.

[info]purplefrog26 , you are beautiful. BTW I really could use a body positive masseuse. I hope to see you at the next Wiscon. Bless.
